Justice of the Peace (JP)
Ministry of Land and Legal Affairs
Overview
A Justice of the Peace (JP) in Trinidad is a legally appointed official who performs various judicial and administrative functions, including witnessing documents, administering oaths, and assisting in court processes.
Justices of the Peace are appointed to perform duties under written law, which include witnessing signatures, administering oaths and affirmations, signing warrants, and granting bail in certain circumstances. They also maintain records of their activities and adhere to a prescribed Code of Ethics to ensure integrity and accountability in their office (The Justices of the Peace Bill, 2001). JPs play a key role in supporting the justice system, particularly in streamlining pre-trial procedures and assisting law enforcement agencies.
